In the early hours of October 7, 2023, a devastating seismic event, measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale, violently shook the vicinity of Herat, Afghanistan. The tremors of this cataclysmic earthquake reverberated across a wide expanse, affecting not just Herat but also eight surrounding villages, resulting in a trail of unprecedented destruction. This calamity, a stark reminder of the region’s vulnerability to geological forces, left a profoundly tragic impact on the lives of the people in the area.

The toll of this catastrophic event was nothing short of heart-wrenching. With a grim statistic of over 3,000 lives lost, the earthquake exacted a heavy human cost, plunging families and communities into mourning. Beyond the staggering loss of life, more than 1,500 individuals suffered injuries of varying severity, further exacerbating the crisis. The destruction was not limited to human lives; it extended to the very foundations of these villages, as over 6 settlements were reduced to rubble, their residents left grappling with the harsh reality of being displaced from their homes.


Recognizing the pressing urgency of the situation, CharityAustralia has swiftly initiated efforts to provide much-needed relief to those impacted by the devastating events. CharityAustralia is currently in the process of conducting a comprehensive assessment of the situation on the ground and is steadfastly committed to delivering essential aid and assistance to alleviate the suffering of those affected.

Our immediate focus includes the provision of vital aid, such as urgent food relief, comforting resources, winter essentials, and crucial hygiene items to bring solace and support to the affected communities. These initial relief efforts aim to address the immediate needs of those grappling with the aftermath of the 2023 earthquake in Afghanistan.
